Impotence may be the consequence of a variety of underlying causes, either psychological, physical or physiological. But many of these conditions can now be reversed through medication and other remedies or treatments.
Impotence may be caused by hormonal deficiency, neural system disorders, inadequate penile blood supply, or psychological problems.
Psychological issues like depression and anxiety also can lead to sexual problems. However, according to the Impotence Institute of America, physical causes account for more than 85 percent of cases.
Some of the most common causes of impotence are arteriosclerosis, diabetes, and high blood pressure.
Interestingly, research also showed that it is being caused by commonly prescribed medications, including those for heart disease, high blood pressure and depression.
Impotence or erectile dysfunction (ED) may be the effect of a hormonal deficiency resulting from inadequate levels of testosterone and the sub-optimal functioning of the pituitary gland.
Poor health or medical conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or coronary artery disease, may also contribute to ED.
Various medications, such as those designed to control high blood pressure, or drugs that affect central nervous system responses such as psychiatric drugs, also can be a cause of impotence.
Restriction of blood flow or lack of penile blood supply - often associated with coronary heart disease, but may also be caused by such things as constant and prolonged exposure to high levels of noise or bright light - may also contribute to erectile dysfunction.
Treatments for prostate cancer, such as surgery to remove the prostate gland or external beam radiotherapy, may damage nerves or impair penile blood supply and cause impotence.
Impotence may also be the consequence of excessive alcohol use. This condition has led to such euphemisms as "whiskey dick" or "brewer's droop". It appears obvious that prevention is possible in this case.
A study also showed that bicycling can cause erectile dysfunction. The study showed that prolonged periods of pressure on the penis from the bicycle saddle was found to be related to it.
Psychological impotence, on the other hand, is either a simple or complex condition. What a person thinks or believes may cause sexual dysfunction, or it may reverse the condition entirely.
Impotence may be caused by certain physical conditions. Most of these conditions are often the result of a medical condition or disease.
Many of the problems associated with impotence may be related to one or more underlying medical causes or conditions.
Psychological factors account for about 20 percent of impotence cases today. What are these psychological conditions?
